Note on Husband: Alexander Victor (WHITWELL) HALE (1) - shared note

Lodged at 185 Gordon Road, when Lucy Jaques had the house.

He belonged to a Liberal Club in Peckham, where he used to take May. The family were all friendly early on.

When Nelly came back to Peckham after Harriett, her Grandmother died, she lived with Lucy and the family. However she had no money or job, and her Mother didn't feel obliged to support her, and made this very clear.

Her next-door neighbour, Mrs. Warner took her to Moorfields and she had an operation to turn her eye. She also had her teeth done!

Albert suffered latterly from cancer, and was in terrible pain, and he died in hospital.

He liked to read and was fond of music. He was a good man, and they had a happy life.

Note on Husband: Alexander Victor (WHITWELL) HALE (2)

spent the day at Kew today and in a spare five minutes, I decided to look at the HALE WW1 soldiers...(as you do!)

Almost immediately, I found Elbert's !! (HO 363 / H38, Page 561).

I haven't yet taken a copy of his service record because the queue for the copier was far too long, it being Saturday, but I've scribbled down a few personal bits & bobs which I thought would be of interest:

When Alexander Victor signed up on 8 Oct 1915, he went to the Grove Park Depot (later stamped approved by Whitehall) and was assigned to the Mechanical Transport Division of the Army Service Corp as Private M/2 130776. On his attestation form, his home address was shown as 6 North Terrace, Swan Lane, Whetstone, his occupation as Chauffeur and his height as 5ft 1in. and a chest measurement of 38+1/2 inches!

Alexander's wife was shown as May Beatrice, formerly Jacques and he had given the details of their marriage as being on the 2nd November 1914. He also showed his first child as Henry Stephen Hale, born 10 April 1915, in Finchley.

After signing up on 8 Oct, Alexander stayed in this Country and was not deployed until December when he was sent to France with the British Expeditionary force. He was actually sent out on Christmas Day!

By the time he was discharged on 20 Feb 1919 (at Wimbledon), his home address had been changed twice; the first amendment was to 161 Gordon Road, Peckham and the second amendment to 185 Gordon Road. Unfortunately, these changes were not dated.13

Note on Husband: Alexander Victor (WHITWELL) HALE (3)

So far no record of his birth - his name too is confusing. On his marriage he is Alexander Victor - but her was always known as Albert.

No obvious record of him in the 1881 / 91 or 01 census.

In the former two he is not with his parents Frederick and Jennie Hale.

Note on Wife: May Beatrice JAQUES - shared note

According to Nelly:

May looked after her Mother, Lucy, after they left Gordon Road.

She left Albert Hale

Despite the difficult times shared between Nelly and May, they became friends again in later years.
