Text From Source: Hi Graham
First of all, thank you so much for the photos you sent - they are great. Secondly, apologies for not getting back to you sooner - things have been hectic here what with school holidays etc. Anyway, I went to visit Aunty Hilda yesterday and we spent about four hours discussing 'the family!'. Ive made loads of notes and need to get them into some sort of order BUT what I can tell you is that my aunty does remember Lucy. My aunty Hilda was born and brought up in Whitby, Cheshire. She was the youngest of 7 children (I think there were 7, I'll confirm that later) born to Hannah Owens and Henry Pugh (also of Kinnerely). As a child Hilda went to Kinnerley regularly for holidays, staying with her Aunty Becky (my great grandmother). She told me that they often went to visit Aunty Lucy and Uncle John walking over the fields - about four or five miles (which, she said was nothing in those days!!!). I'm not sure of the geography but I guess Ruyton XI Towns is about that distance from Kinnerley. She said that Aunty Becky and Aunty Lucy were very good friends and used to laugh a lot together. Her most vivid memory of this house is of an immaculately polished red tiled floor!! My aunty believes that Lucy and John were married. She can't remember any children, but at that time Mary and John would be adults (my aunt was born in 1909). She told me she could remember someone called 'Polly' from there but wasn't sure of the connection. I didn't realise that Mary Deakin Owen was also known as Polly. My aunty cannot remember Agnes in connection with Lucy, but does have a vague recollection of an 'Ag'at the post office - is this the same person? I have got a few photos which, after they're scanned I'll send to you (unfortunately, none of Lucy, but there is another box to be retrieved from my aunty's attic, so fingers crossed for something more:o)) My aunty said something very interesting about an Aunty Mary who had 22 children, but only 21 survived!!!! I'm yet to work who she was, but, i think she was Hilda's Great Aunt. Have you heard of this woman?
My immediate family have no recent connection to Kinnerley. My grandfather George left Kinnerley aged 16 and came to Whitby to live with his Aunty Hannah and Uncle Henry. He settled here, marrying my grandmother, Lilian Jones. My mother Jacqueline Owen was born in Whitby, in 1934 and she was an only child. My grandfather was one of 8 children. William (who ended up living in Whitchurch, Shropshire), Gladys (the only daughter) who was adopted by her spinister Aunt, Sarah Owens and they lived in Worcester; George, my grandfather; Arthur also settled in Whitby; John worked on a farm in Oswestry later marrying and settling in Whitby too; Edwin disappeared to Australia after getting a local girl pregnant - she had twins!!!(more scandal) he turned up many years later living in Ross on Wye; Harold joined the army and ended up settling in Rochdale; and Harry joined the airforce and settled in London. My mum is in touch, and close to, most of her cousins so we do have quite an extended Owen family.
A little bit of info about me now. Im married to Stuart and we have three children Sara who's 19 and at St Andrews uni; Owen who's 17 and waiting to apply to join the police; and Freya whos 11 and obviously still at school. I'm a midwife and Stuart runs the family business with my brother, David. David has two girls Hannah and Lauren. My sister Stephanie has two girls too, Amelia and Evie.
It'd be nice to know a little more about you too!! Anyway, I will write again soon when hopefully we'll have a bit more info to share.
Take care. Viv.
