Note on Husband: John FULLAGAR - shared note

In the census of 1861, John Charles Snr. and his family are living at 74 Week Street, Maidstone. John is listed as a visitor.

[RG9/503/35b]

The following are two emails from Yvonne and Walter Watterson:

"Hi Graham!

VERY may thanks for the wonderful information on the Hoadly Family AND congratulations - what an achievement - I hope you have deposited the Hoadly story in an Archive for posterity?!

(Actually it would team up well with "The Fullagar Story from c 1518" which is at xKB/FUL at Maidstone Archives!!)

I have enjoyed every word of it & will place on file. (Incidentally, I was about to type this reply when walwat received your second lot & sent you his reassurance.)

Now, have all the info about John & Catherine's three daughters AND YES they did have TWO SONS as well:

JOHN CHARLES (of course) Fullagar b. third qtr., 1865, but died first qtr., 1867 Maidstone

and

EDWARD ("Ted") Fullagar (born I don't known when) - married & produced two daughters.

This info. (about "Ted") was given me many years ago by relative Jenny Fullagar.

I have transcribed the whole of the St. Catherine's Index for Fullagar (this is the correct spelling), & have 7,129 Fullagar names on database (b.d. & m.) - not all from G.R.O., including those collected in over 30 years of Fullagar research.

So since your email, I have searched the data base for Edward his birth & marriage.

The ONLY likely one I have found is Edward Fullagar b.1865 - died first qtr., 1945 Maidstone. But this is tenuous - he could even have a quite different name & simply known as "Ted".

I search constantly.

Anyway, he having had daughters only - it DOES look as if there are no surviving Fullagar descendants from John Fullagar/Catherine Hoadly.

(I shall see how many Hoadly's there are in the Sydney Tel. Directory,)

How interesting it is Hoadlys/Fullagars were so closely "intertwined" in Maidstone.

Samuel Fullagar (b.1771) owned Weeks Street AND St. Faith's, Maidstone (latter after the Walloons moved out) and a Wilkins was the ggmother of John; Collison of Chart Sutton married into the Fullagar family too, but there again, Kent is notorious for intermarriage I have found.

The Fullagar Tree to which John, draper of West Malling, belongs is HUGE!

John's parents were John (b.13/3/1796 d.24/12/1874 W. Malling (Plumber, Queenhithe, Upper Thames Street, London) who married Sarah Pullen (d.5/3/1853) on 27/1/1834 (& John jnr. was the only issue);

John (1796) was a son of John Fullagar b.18/10/1762 Lenham d.29/5/1826 who married Mary Wilkins on 10/11/1794 &

that John's father was Kelsham Fullagar b.20/3/1732 Headcorn, (butcher of Lenham) d.2.12/1800 who married Eliz. Giles 19/10/1761 Lenham -

Kelsham was the son of Thomas Fullagar of Headcorn & Sarah Bennett of Tenterden, who married at Langley on 21/3/1727.

Unfortunately, we can't pin point Thomas' parents (Headcorn was the Fullagar base) and I never "guess".

My great great great grandfather George Fullagar (b.1790 Headcorn) had a sister Sarah Bennett Fullagar b.1785 - so we constantly strive for the connection!

The Fullagar's commence with Dominyche Fullagarde, Mercer of Headcorn, whose Will is dated 1588.

Oddly enough, walwat's family emanate from King's Norton! (See Hoadly).

Must hasten to say Peugeot is spelt thus (we have one 1962 Model, called "Charmaine") - and we used have a Wolseley ("Sybil") unfortunately she was swept away in a flood!

And had you called you would have met also "Lulu" our 1954 Morris Minor (British Racing Green - with a Lord Nuffield Engine Plate - she is superb too! We won't mention the French Poodle, "Robert" - he's quite neurotic!!

We WERE coming over this month (to stay with YOUR relative Jenny Fullagar-Atkins in Old Wives Lees & her brother's flat in Canterbury but F. & M. has stopped us (perhaps I've told you this already?!)

Cheers for now, Yvonne, Walwat & "Robert"

X

Hi again Graham:

Yesterday I omitted (in my fervour), to give you details of Wills pertaining to John & Catherine Fullagar's family:

Here we go:

1. Catherine's Will was proved 28/1/1910 to John Fullagar, Draper, amounting to eight hundred & fifty five Pounds.

Died West Malling 4/1/1899 - Admin. 1899.

2. Jessie Charlotte Fullagar, Spinster, School House, High Street, West Malling

died 20/6/1932 Probated London 13/9/1932 to Benjamin Edward Lines, Draper.

Effects nine hundred & twenty-seven Pounds six shillings & eleven pence.

3. Mary Catherine Fullagar, late of West Malling, Spinster,

died 7/9/1917 at 125 Church Street, Edgware Road, Middlesex.

Probated London 2/7/1918 to Jessie Charlotte Fullagar, Spinster.

Effects under nine hundred & seventy-nine Pounds & two shillings.

So it looks as if Catherine's nephew, Benjamin Edward Lines, MAY have taken over the Drapery business ultimately! And they left the available money to each other - most of, or some anyway, would have come from the Hoadly's - see John Charles' Will!)

Interesting, isn't it?!

Cheers, Yvonne.

PS Graham. We were due for a visit to Blighty next month. Friends and relatives are expecting us. Due to the FnM., we abandoned. We always spend much time in the Counties. How do you see the situation?

If we come in June (which we never do because of crowds) do you foresee less tourists then? Any comment helps making a decision.

Walter.
