Note on Husband: Leonard Wilfred HOADLY (1) - shared note
According to his daughter, Joyce, Len was born at midnight - his father maintaining that he was born on the 8th September, whilst his mother was adamant that he was born on the 7th!
By the 1891 census, he is at 136 Plumstead Road, with his parents and step sister, Margaret. [RG12/537/22].
He went to Woods Road School, and was a choirboy at the Wesleyan Church.
He was fond of cricket.
He left home to work for the Post Office at Littlehampton, regularly driving the mail van to London.
He once shared a cab in Brixton with the great Music Hall star, G.H. Chirgwin.
He joined the Royal Army Service Corps in 1914 and was in the Salonica Campaign.
He also went to North Africa, Mesopotamia, and Palestine.
Was a great boxer in the army, and also joined an army Concert Party, with whom he tap-danced and acted.
Appeared in "Hemlock Shears", a spoof on Sherlock Holmes, which was commended by the Commanding Officer.
He returned from the War via Italy, and a terrible storm, of which his mother was unaware!
After the war, he worked as a pastry cook with his father. Len was mad about cars, and was a better driver than his father, so much so, that his mother would only travel by car if Len was driving.
This became a source of jealousy on the part of Frederick William (who once knocked a milk cart over on Brixton Hill!)
[Letter of reference 1911]
"The Chantry Mottingham Kent 9/3/11
I have known Mr. F.W. Hoadly the Father of Leonard Hoadly for many years he having been in my employ. His son Leonard is a respectable young fellow and well up to any mechanical job he would undertake.
T.G. Cannon"
[This would be Thomas G. Cannon who in 1901 census is listed as a flour factor aged 42 and living in Mottingham.
In the 1881 census he is at 2 Pickford Road, Bexley, Kent and is listed as a "phonographer"]
In 1918(?) Len appeared as one of the Thing Boys [presumably a burlesque of the Bing Boys with George Robey] in "Top Hole - a Burlesque by members of 738 M.T. Company A.S.C.
It may be that at short notice he took over the role of Hemlock Sheers - a send up of Sherlock Holmes. A note in the programme states:
"Dear Cpl. Hoadley [sic]
Many congratulations on your performance tonight. It was the most able work I have ever seen done by an understudy. [illegible name] 11 June 18"
Mr. Robert Farrer, who worked alongside Len in 1934 kindly wrote these reminiscences in 1996:
"Leonard: of average height, very dark eyes, dark hair, and of slim build.
Served in the first World Way in the Royal Army Service Corps as a driver.
Saw service in Mesopotamia and joined the Army entertainment section. He was very versatile, could tap dance, and had a fund of stories, which during my employment with him, I became the recipient.
His wages as Pastry cook were the envy of the regular Baker and the jobbers.
I remember him telling me "He gets six pound ten shillings a week, while I as a Baker get four pound five!"
He lived in Albert Road in the High Street with his favourite pub, "The Red Cow" on the corner.
His wife often came into the shop with their daughter, who must have been seven or eight years of age and who went to school at the Marist Convent, Queens Road, Peckham.
Incidentally, Len went to school locally; it was at Woods Road School.
Len also boxed as a young man at the Orchard Club in Peckham.
He was at fifty still lithe and agile, and loved to recall his youth."
Note on Husband: Leonard Wilfred HOADLY (2)
Joyce Hoadly, Len's daughtre also said that she thought her father was a featherweight.
Len worked in his brother jack's shop until it was bombed in WW2.
He then went to work for Miller's Bakery in Poplar / Stepney, and then for Allied Bakeries.
