Note on Marriage

Edie was born in Dulwich. At some point the family moved to Camberwell, and then Bill and Dorrie ran a Baker's shop in West Norwood. This was eventually sold to (possibly a brother of Con) Hilkene.

Aunt Lizzie Knowles used to tell of how well the shop was doing after ? Hilkene had taken over!

From West Norwood, they moved to Hounslow. Because of Dorrie's angina they wanted to move nearer the shops, but WW2 prevented this happening, as they couldn't get a mortgage. At this stage they were near Heston Airport. The doctor recommended they move to the country, so they moved to Broad Lane, Bracknell - Edie looked after her parents there - Dorrie dying first at the age of 64, then Bill some time later. The Broad Lane properties were eventually pulled down. Edie set up home with her neighbour Jack, in Bracknell, until his death from cancer.16

Note on Husband: William Joseph DALE - shared note

Living at 56 Queen's Road, Peckham at time of his marriage.

Note on Wife: Dorothy HOADLY - shared note

According to Joyce Hoadly, Dorrie, as she was known, had a propensity to "wear hats nobody else would wear"!

She had agood sense of humour, and liked to sing.

Dorrie and Bill's marriage was witnessed by her father, Frederick William, and her sister, Eva.

She was still living at198 Peckham High Street at that time.

"Eva, I am told, was very musical and a keen pianist and apparently Dorothy had perfect pitch."16
