"The [1901] Census info is quite interesting as I do believe that the father [Richard Trelease] and mother [Jessie Trelease] may have been separated at this time…The family history is that he was an alcoholic…he may have been living with the other woman..., he may have had another child or more….by "the other woman" …Jessie left him to come to America and was supported by her sons….here…Lived in Telluride, Colorado, and later in San Francisco, California with Roy..……Alex did not come to the U. S. till 1902…on the Philadelphia…out of Southampton…"

The 2 sons Thomas Henry ( b. 1851 at Bolingey )and Richard ( b. 1854 at Ventonleague) did not become miners but were apprenticed to Samuel Harris, R. Clarke and Co., Boscawen St. Truro , as outfitters, ( according to 1871 Census ). As mentioned above Thomas Henry went on to Falmouth and left £ 20,326 11s 8d in his Will when he died in 1920 aged 69.

Richard Trelease had a tailors shop at 42, Union St. Torquay by the 1891 Census, with his wife Jessie ( Hoadly) aged 31 born Old Kent Road, Surrey and 3 children Alexander, 7, Richard, 4 and Mildred 3, born in Torquay. Jessie registered the death of Prudence in July 1891. Richard and Jessie Trelease moved to London and by 1893 lived at 8, Micheldever Rd, Lee, Kent when son Roy Cecil was born. By the 1901 Census Jessie Trelease is living as a housekeeper in Isleworth, Middlesex with Mildred, 13, Roy 8 and new son Howard,6. BUT no Richard Trelease. I assume Alexander has gone to America by the 1901Census and Richard was aged 14 living at the Church of St. Margaret's and St John, London as a chorister. Richard later goes to America and passes through Ellis Island aged 18 in 1905.

 

Richard was described as ' the black sheep of the family' ! according to my mother. She was led to believe that Jessie took the rest of the family to America. Is this right? Obviously some contact was kept with Alexander T.and Richard M. in America because it appears my mother's cousin Suzanne Whitworth visited Olive Trelease in the 1950's and Suzanne Trelease has sent photos of this visit. Rev.Richard Mitchell Trelease visited my grandmother Una Trelease in Cornwall in the early 1950's .
