St David's Presbyterian Church, Belmont, Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Administrative and biographical history: St. David's, Belmont was founded in 1905 when its building in Belmont Bank was completed. The chapel belongs to the Tabernacle District of the Montgomery and Shropshire Presbytery.
English meetings had been held by the Calvinistic Methodists in Shrewsbury since 1854 when Mrs Ebenezer Williams, wife of the minister of Hill's Lane Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church, set up a class for non Welsh-speaking girls. This in turn became a Sunday School before moving to rented rooms in Claremont Hill.
In 1864 the community at Claremont Hill bought land to build their own church in Frankwell, which was then opened in 1886. However, the area in which the church was built was not considered a desirable area for the church, and therefore in 1904 the work on a new church building in Belmont Bank was started. In 1931 Hill's Lane was closed and the congregation moved to St. David's and by 1935 they had enough money to build yet another building which was opened in 1936.

Note on Husband: Robert Charles HOADLY (1) - shared note

Known as "Bob".

Sang in the choir at St Dunstan's Stepney.

Note on Husband: Robert Charles HOADLY (2)

During WW2 was in Royal Navy, as Ordinary Telegraphist C/JX259111.

During the war, Bob was on HMS Sikh, a tribal destroyer. He loved the ship, and his time on there, and was very glad not to have been sent to join a battleship or cruiser. He felt it was like family on there.

HMS Sikh, a tribal destroyer, was sunk at Tobruk on 15th September 1942.

Whilst they were being shelled in the bay of Tobruk, HMS Zulu, who came in after, tried to get a line to the Sikh and haul her out, they started to, but shrapnel snapped the towline. They attempted to try again but the captain of the Sikh told them to give it up, which they reluctantly did.

In 1942, made Italian Prisoner of War, in POW Camp 70,P.M.3300 (Compound 3).

The POWs were landed in Italy at Tarantiono and had a very long drive in lorries to the camp at Altamura near Bari.

He was a POW for about three months. Churchill got the POWs exchanged - eight Italians for each one of the English POWs.

When he returned from Italy, circa 1942/3 having been a POW of the Italians, Bob was detailed to the naval base HMS Ganges in Chatham.

He was given two weeks leave as compensation for being a POW.

After his leave, he received a chit to say he was drafted to submarines. He went to the office, and an officer (who may also have been a POW) said that no way was Bob to go to the submarines.

From Chatham, he then travelled to USA, on a cruiser, where he was sick as a dog! they used to launch planes from it. He recalled lying down amongst the railings feeling terrible in the night.

He was in New York for a few days - in winter, where it was freezing, and then by train to Miami, Florida, for a course on submarine chasing, whereby he would have been on a ship chasing submarines. Bob didn't like New York; he was completely unimpressed with Times Square. It was also the first time he had eaten bread in America, and found it sweet and cake-like!

He walked round by the docks one night in the pitch dark, and there was a great broadcasting set-up where Frank Sinatra was singing. He thought that was marvellous.

He was billetted in a big hotel on the seafront. The weather, in contrast to New York, was sweltering! he loved it there. He went out in glass-bottomed boats.

During this period, he also visited Boston, where he met Irma, who lived in Quincy, Massachusets. Her father gave him tickets to travel back and forth to visit.

He was then drafted to a submarine-chasing ship HMS Conn, a captain class frigate.

During this period, he went on the Conn to Belfast for a re-fit.

Towards the end of the war, he was sent up to Whitchurch, in Shropshire, in an old hotel. Here he was set to listening in on radios to the Germans. At the same time, Gwyneth, his future wife, was doing the same work based in Cloverfield, an old vicarage. They were within walking distance of each other. He recalls the grounds of where he was abutted the grounds of Cloverfield.

They used to speak on the phone before they met - proably soving crosswords! They eventually met at a local pub. A naval colleague of Bob's, Percy Mead, had gone out with Gwyneth initially, but she chose Bob.

On VE day (8th May 1945), Bob was in London, he went to Chrisp Street, Poplar, where everyone was celebrating.

Bob proposed to Gwyn at her home at 4 Victoria Street, Shrewsbury. She was combing her hair at the time! She looked at him typically coldly and said "Alright"!

Bob's father didn't like Gwyn. because she didn't like him. She thought his father was over-controlling, in particular towards Bob. Gwyn went out of her way to antagonise him. On one occasion, at F.J's home in Hornchurch, when his father returned to the front room where Bob and Gwyn were sitting, she deliberatley grabbed Bob and kissed him, knowing that it would annoy F.J.!

However, she and Bob's mum Jessie got on extrememly well.

Evelyn May, Gwyn's mother, was quite happy about the impending wedding; Bob had asked her first - she said "Yes - but you are supposed to ask her father for his daughter's hand." So - he told Eric that he wanted to marryu Gwyn, who replied;

"You don't know what you're taking on, son"!

He thought his daughter was pretty uncontrollable! For Gwyn, the War was a means of release from the restrictive boredom of her home life in Shrewsbury.

Bob and Gwyn married in Shrewsbury.

Immediately after their marriage, Bob and Gwyn lived together for a short period at "Eastwell", 107 Station Lane, with Bob's parents.

Bob found that 34 The Avenue, Hornchurch was for sale. Mr Platt was the previous owner. He told his father that he would like to live at 34; his father said he would buy it, and Bob would repay through rent.

Note on Wife: Gwyneth ROBERTS (1) - shared note

Known as "Gwyn".

She was born at 6.10pm and baptised by Rev. D. M. Rowlands.

As a child had a Belgian police dog named "Pete".

After she married, she had a mongrel called "Tess" for about five years, and Petra, a Welsh collie, from 1963.

Was a member of the Girls Training Corps, and the A.R.P. (1941-2).

Attended the Mildred Cureton Dancing Academy, winning a bronze medal for ballroom dancing.

At 17, she was a clerk at Woowich Arsenal, and was evacuated to Shewsbury.

Then a clerk at Shrewsbury Post Office, and during the War, a Telegraphist for the Foreign Office at the Vicarage, Chester Road, Cloverfield, Whitchurch, Shropshire.

Later on, she was billeted at 16 Hyde Park Gardens.

She and Bob moved into 34 The Avenue, Hornchurch in November 1947.

She died at 12.25pm.

Note on Wife: Gwyneth ROBERTS (2)

Gwyn was first billed as Wardrobe Mistress in the programmes of the Queen's Theatre, Hornchurch in February 1963 for the production of "Juno And The Paycock".

She had been a member of the Queen's Theatre Club previously and had helped out with costumes.17

Note on Wife: Gwyneth ROBERTS (3)

A reluctant "actress" - Gwyn made a number of appearances in plays at the Queens Theatre, as in those days repertory theatres often used to call upon locals to play very small roles.

I believe her first appearance was in April 1963 as a neighbour in Eugene O’Neill's Desire Under The Elms, starring Sebastian Shaw.

In October 1963, to her amusement, she appeared as a tart - Bobo, in Brendan Behan's The Hostage. Certainly production photographs exist with her in the show.

In November 1963, in The Reluctant Debutante, she played the housekeeper, Mrs Edgar - billed in the prograrmme as Gwyn Hoadly.

Her last billed appearance was from 23 April to 11 May 1968 in "The Farmer's Wife" as

The Hon. Mrs Tudor where she was billed as Gwynydd Roberts, a jokey allusion to her Welsh heritage.17
