Note on Husband: James JAQUES - shared note
The IGI has a James Jaques born to James and Margaret, and christened at St Botolphe on 21 Sep 1823, who could be a likely candidate.
In 1848 living at 25 Minories Aldgate.
In 1851, James, Frances and their two daughters were at 3 Church Row, St Botolphe, Aldgate, where he was the Licensed Victualler. (The Bell Tavern)
[HO107/1524/140/46]
The family no longer at Church Row in 1861.
Thus far unable to find him and his family on the 1861 census. (Ancestry.com)
This family were living at 50 Clifton Crescent, Peckham, in 1881. This was literally the next road to 67 Asylum Road, where the family of Thomas Harvey Cooper were living. Both streets lead off the Old Kent Road.
Charles Jaques married Lucy Cooper later in 1881 and both gave their addresses as Old Kent road on their Marriage certificate. Also, Charles did not mention that his father was deceased, so one can surmise that James Jaques may have been alive at the 1881census.
The only problems with this James is that his wife is Frances Mary Wilson, and not Frances Margaret, as appears on Charles' birth Certificate [on which "Jaques" is spelt incorrectly] However her signature could suggest that the registrar interpreted "Mary" as a shortened form of "Margaret".
There is a problem with James' profession: on his marriage certificate, he is a printer.
On his children's baptismal register entries, he has become a licensed Victualler.
By the 1881 census, he is once again a printer and compositor.
Charles' father is a wharf clerk, on his birth certificate, and an agent by the time of his wedding.
It is possible that James changed jobs a lot - Charles certainly seemed to.
Note on Wife: Frances Mary WILSON - shared note
Having checked the marriages of James Jaques and a Frances Margaret Wilson, (or, indeed a Frances Wilson), in the St Catherine House Indexes, prior to 1862 (When Charles Hancock Jaques was born), I only found this marriage.
On Charles' birth certificate, his mother is Frances Margaret, but on this marriage certificate, she is Frances Mary.
Also James Jaques is a printer on the marriage certificate, a wharf clerk on Charles' birth certificate, and an Agent on Charles' marriage certificate.
At this stage, I am therefore not absolutely certain that James and Frances Mary are the correct couple.
There is a Frances Jaques age 59 (widow) boarding in Camberwell in the 1881 census, born in Devon (circa 1822) who could seem to be James' widow, in which case he would have died before the census of 1881. (She was living at 39, Herne Hill, Brixton.)
James is not described as deceased on Charles Marriage certificate later in 1881, so I'm fairly convinced that this family is that of Charles.
