Note on Husband: William ROBERTS (1)

There is some difficulty with Williams father;

On his first marriage certificate to Mary Owens he says his father was Robert Williams - a stonemason.

On his second marriage certificate to Jane Lewis he says his father was Robert Roberts - a builder.

Could this be a clerical error or was there something more here - e.g. was William Roberts legitimate.

Owing to the commoness of the name, and the fact that he was an adult living away from home by the time of the 1841 census, I have found it difficult to find a convincing and obvious family for William Roberts in Trawsfynydd.

To further add to the story, William Roberts's obiturary in the Montgomeryshire Express dated Tuesday Dec 10, states:

"ROBERTS.- December 7 at 22 Commercial Street, Newtown, Mr. William Roberts Snr, Coachbuilder &c., second son of Mr. William Roberts, Trawsfynnydd, Merioneth, aged 75 years.[Friends please accept this intimation, Open funeral at 2 o'clock on Wednesday next].

Note on Husband: William ROBERTS (2) - shared note

In 1851, William, by now a Widower, was living in Commercial Road, Newtown. [HO107/2497/328]

In 1861, he was still there, with his new wife and four children. [RG9/4251]

1871 Census: [RG10/5616/47b] William and Jane lived at Canal Road, Newtown.

In 1881, at the same address, with two lodgers. [RG11/5487/40]

Archie Roberts:

"The Roberts's had a cousin, R.W. Roberts, who used to fill his church at Liverpool" [Did William Roberts, therefore, have a brother?]

Dear Mr Hoadley [sic]
I am enclosing the certificate you requested.
The information you gave was no great help - London references have no bearing on ours.
I thought I should also explain some of the entries on the certificates.
The marriage of ROBERTS/JONES is in fact signed (Annie Roberts)
The spelling to entry 335's date is as seen on certificate in register.
I noted that WILLIAM ROBERTS' first wife Mary died 1850 aged 28 and Mr Roberts then married Jane Lewis in 1853.
Entry 335 Col 2 W O Roberts - Deputy seemed to be making the error of putting all the names including SURNAME in this column. Lots of errors and corrections in entries during this period.
Yours sincerely
H. Bolton
