Note on Husband: Thomas Harvey COOPER - shared note
Born in Havil Street, Camberwell.
At his marriage, he was living in Coburg Road.
In 1881 was living at 67, Asylum Road, Old Kent Road, Peckham, with his large family. [RG11/0691/16/25]
Eventually moved to 185 Gordon Road, Peckham.
Nelly Jaques remembered that when she was a girl he was always ill in bed there. One Christmas, May, Lilian and Nelly went to visit him, and he gave them each a present. Lily and May had a big doll each, and Nelly had a rubber wringer(??). That's all she remembered of him, as he died when they were children.
Otherwise they saw little of him. He put all his children into the glove cleaning business, in particular, Ernie and Eb.
In his will he left £1727 / 3 / 3
"This is the last will and testament of me THOMAS HARVEY COOPER of No 163 Gordon Road Peckham in the county of Surrey Glove Cleaner I firstly revoke all former wills by me made and I appoint my wife Harriett Cooper and Joseph Green (hereinafter called my trustees) EXECUTORS and Trustees of this my will I bequeath to my said wife the sum of twenty pounds which legacy she is to have for her immediate purpose out of the first moneys belonging to my estate which may come to the hands of my trustees and be available for the payment thereof. Note on Wife: Harriett ALEFOUNDER (1) - shared note
Harriett born with twin sister Charlotte.
Thus far can't find Harriett on the 1851 Census. (Ancestry.com)
She gave her address on her marriage certificate as Southampton Street [Camberwell] and Thomas was living in Coburg Road.
Nelly Jaques said she [Harriett] had a sister who was a ladies maid, and who lived in a big house.
There was also another sister,Sue, who was poor, and who lived at Edmonton.
Neither married.
[Records show that Nelly was mistaken in this - all Arthur's children married]
Sarah Ann Alefounder is mentioned in Thomas Harvey Cooper's will. [And is presumably Alfred's widow].
After Thomas's death in 1904, Harriett took over his glove cleaning business, and its employees.
About 1908, she left the busines to Aunt Edie (b. 1871).
Harriett took a house in Vale Road, Claygate, Surrey, and Nelly Jaques went with her to look after her, and she remained with her until she died in 1930, at the age of 90.
Harriett owned several houses in Gordon road, Peckham, and she lived at 185 with her husband. [Next to a laundry ].
For a week until she died, she laid in bed with her eyes open looking at Nelly. Nell would moisten her lips with brandy. On the Saturday there was a bad storm, and Nell's friend, Alice Overton came round.
She said:
"Oh, Nelly. I think your Grandma's gone."
She put a mirror to her, and saw that she was indeed dead.
Nelly cycled round to the doctor, who confirmed the fact, and the District Nurse attended to the body.
Note on Wife: Harriett ALEFOUNDER (2)
Harriett went to a Baptist Church in Peckham. On Peckham High Street. The minister used to come and visit her.
Nelly went to church with her and used to sit up in the gallery.
Later in Vale Road, Claygate, Nelly would wheel her grandma in her chair to the Baptist Church there. Also to Church in Chessington and Oxshott. - she would cycle there through the cowfields. Pitch black - no lights - went by the light of their bicycles.
Nelly's girlfriends - some were nurses in the local big houses - would come over to tea and they would try and play hymns.
One was a cook, one a dressmaker. Minnie Bevan worked in a drapers' shop.
The gardener from the manor house taught Nellie how to garden.20

Text From Source: I was able to look through the Victorian Death Index and found Edith Helen Cooper died in 1955 aged 84 years. The registration number is 11358. The death place is abbreviated to SAND . From a web site that give the meanings of abbreviations for Victoria http:/ /members.westnet.com.au/web/talltrees/resources/vic_abbr.htm I found that SAND is an abbreviation for either Sandhurst or Sandridge. As you mentioned a photograph in Mildura, I think it is likely that the name is Sandhurst (which is the now part of the City of Ballarat). See this web site http://www.bendigo.vic.gov.a u/index.asp?h=-1 Go to the A-Z Index and select Sandhurst Ward Profile and you will see that it is the centre of Bendigo – which is not far from Mildura which is on the Murray River. I can’t find any cemetery web site for the area however. The names on the entry were abbreviated to Thomas Harv and Harriet Alesounder |
