Note on Husband: Henry HALE (2)

In the mean time here are my notes on Henry Hale. I have always been told that he was the black sheep of the family, I think that this was because he refused to follow in the family business of hair dressing, anyway.....

In the 1871 Census Henry was aged 8 and entered as a scholar at 2 Robert St Stockwell Lambeth. He was living with his parents and brother.

On his Marriage Certificate 4th August 1880 Henry is aged 19 and a general dealer. They married in Newington

In the 1881 Census Henry was aged 18 and entered as a general dealer. He and his wife were lodging at 83 Portland Street Newington Surrey. His wife's name has been transcribed in error as C. Hale. Living at the address were:

May A. Bennett Head 41 Mangler

E.G. Bennett Son 9

M.G. Bennett Dau 5

Sophia Yorke 57 Visitor Nurse (Sub Med)

Henry Hale Lodger 18 General Dealer

C. Hale Wife 16

In the 1891 Census Henry was aged 28. He was living Halfax Road, Newington,Walworth with his family. He was entered as a bricklayer's labourer.

In the 1901 Census Henry was aged 37. He was living at 19 Cornwall Place, Lambeth. He was working as a general dealer (shop).

When his wife Elizabeth died in 1904, Henry is entered as Harry on the death certificate. His occupation was entered as a costermonger.

In 1923 Henry was working as a general dealer and living in Fletton. He originally came from London.

Mum says that Henry traded in china.4

Note on Wife: Elizabeth Ann ELPHICK

On the marriage certificate of Elizabeth and Henry Hale, she said she was 18 - but it is highly likely

she lied! Both the 1901 census, and in the national BMD indexes, her birth day was three years

before - in other words she got married when she was 15!5
