Email from Ainslie Sharpe:
I have been searching for Thomas Cooper (still) and now that the IGI is on the internet and I can spend even more fruitless time.
However, among the many Thomas's is one who is the son of John & Sarah Cooper.
Just deciding which John and which Sarah is a real treat as there were many of them, but a John Cooper married a Sarah Chambers on 15 December 1776 at Strathfield Saye.
Someone submitted their family research to the IGI in which the same marriage was referred to as "of Sherborne St John, Hampshire, England".
Frederick Hellyer Cooper at the christening of his sons Frederick H. and Charles George Harvey Cooper on 15/6/1828, stated his occupation as Coal Merchant.
Now there was a Coal Merchant in the Newington area called John Cooper. I found him in the Piggot's Commercial Directory for Surrey about1831, and I also found him in the 1841 Census.
This John Cooper married Charlotte Smith on 18 November 1818 at Sherborne St John.
He was also christened there in 1797. (Shown as 45 at the 1841 Census).
He was the child of William Cooper and Ann Alderslade who were married at Bramley,Hampshire, but all their children were christened at Sherborne St John.(Mary 1784, William 1787, James 1790, Sarah 1792, George 1795, John 1797, Thomas 1801, David 1804 and Daniel 1807.
I always thought that perhaps Frederick H. worked for sometime with this John Cooper, Coal Merchant - perhaps a relation? All supposition, but maybe!
The children of John & Sarah Chambers were Thomas (born 1779), christened 1780 at 6 months (perhaps ours?),
William c 1785,
Richard c 1789,
George c 1791 - all at St Mary's Portsea.
There was a John Cooper, son of John Cooper and Elizabeth Stone, christened at Sherborne St John in 1752.
Other children of the family were Thomas c 1746,
Elizabeth c 1747,
David c 1748, all christened at Sherborne St John.
I wish we could find out how old Thomas and Sarah Hellyer were when they got married - it would help a lot!
Most people were older than 19 and 15 (if she is the daughter of William Hellyer and Jane Knight of Porchester) when they married, but then Frederick H. was only 19 when he married in 1819.
Email from Ainslie Sharpe Sun 20/04/2003:
I think that I might have stumbled across the family that could be ours - but there is no proof and only a "gut" feeling.
See what you think.
I had always (with no logic) presumed that Thomas Cooper and Sarah Hellyer were young - ie born about 1780.
However, based on the fact that Thomas & Sarah had only 4 children that we know about, not the 10 - 12 as many of their contemporaries had, they could have been older when they married.
I have always been intrigued with the parallels in the lives of a William Varlo Hellyer, Solicitor, and Frederick Hellyer Cooper and thought there must be a connection some where.
William Varlo Hellyer was christened at St Mary's Portsea on 29 Mary 1797, was married at St George's Hanover Square on19 January 1818, and their first child was christened at St Luke's Chelsea on 7 December 1820.
Frederick Hellyer Cooper was christened at Droxford on 3 June 1800, (as you know his parents were married at St Mary's Portsea), he was married at St George's Hanover Square on 22 February 1819, and their first child was christened at St Luke's Chelsea on 16 August 1820.
As you know, one of the sponsor at Frederick Hellyer Cooper's christening was an Elizabeth Cooper, who must be a connection somehow.
I have found a family of Hellyers - Father William Hellyer and mother Elizabeth Cleverly (or Cleaverly) who married in Portchester on 4 January 1762.
Their children are:
Unknown female Hellyer, christened Portchester 5 September 1762.
[ all this information is from Batch C062151 Christenings of the Parish of Portchester,Hampshire.
John Hellyer, christened Portchester 27 May 1764
Sarah Hellyer, christened Portchester 23 January 1766
Philip Hellyer, christened Portchester 20 December 1767
John Hellyer, above, is the father of William Varlo Hellyer - so if this Sarah Hellyer is "ours" William Varlo and Frederick would have been cousins.
Sarah would have been 33 years old at the time of her marriage, and 40 years old at the time of the birth of Elisabeth Jane Cooper in 1806.
Among the many Thomas Coopers, there are some possibilities as well, but which one is any one's guess!!
There is some 8 children christened at St Mary's Portsea with the father's name given as John Cooper, (no mother's name listed in the Parish records) born between 1754 and 1761 - obviously all cannot be from the one family!!
They are:
Betty Cooper, christened 13 January 1754
Thomas Cooper, christened 18 May 1755
Elizabeth Cooper, christened 1 July 1755
John Cooper, christened 15 August 1756
Thomas Cooper, christened 19 September 1756
George Cooper, christened 27 November 1757
William Cooper, christened 25 December 1757
Molly Cooper christened 11 January 1761
Just may be, those in red, are "ours" and perhaps either George or William.
However if this is our Thomas Cooper, it rules out any connection with the Tho. Cooper who signed all those Census sheets in 1841 - he would have been about 85 year old!!!
There are some other Coopers in Broughton, father Thomas Cooper, mother Sarah Thomas Cooper, christened 7 May 1761
Mary Cooper, christened 17 April 1763
William Cooper, christened 4 January 1765
Elizabeth Cooper, christened 23 December 1768
Robert Cooper, christened 23 December 1768
Then there is another Thomas Cooper, but no sister Elizabeth - again father Thomas Cooper, mother Sarah, all christened at Portchester (same as the Hellyers)
Thomas Cooper, christened 21 February 1768
John Cooper, christened 21 September 1770
William Cooper, christened 15 September 1772.
I have just had a horrible thought - may be Elizabeth Cooper is a sister-in-law - although you would think that the brother would also be included, if this was the case rather than William Augustus Bettesworth and John Prior.(Incidentally, did you know that a William Augustus Bettesworth was christened at St Mary's in Portsea in 1736. there is also a John Prior christened there in 1767!).
I don't know about these Coopers, but I feel that there may definitely be something in the Hellyer and Portchester connection above.
I think this lot is definitely in the same league as the Maynes in Ireland.
Best left alone!!!

Dear Graham
I found this reference to the Camberwell Workhouse (it was in Havil
Street!!). Maybe when a miracle occurs you might be able to find time to
have a look!!

Also:
The web site below tells about the Camberwell workhouse, and it says that
"Havil Street
The oldest workhouse buildings at Havil Street were erected in about 1818. Over the years, the site became increasingly important as a hospital. In 1873 a large new infirmary was erected at the north of the site, at the junction with Brunswick Road. Its central administrative block was five storeys high and contained offices, staff accommodation, and special wards. To each side were three storey wings, for men at the north, and women at the south."
So that would explain why he was there!! Not destitute, but very sick!

Note on Husband: Frederick Hellyar COOPER (3)
Ainslie Sharpe has constructed the following:
I have worked out the time line for FHC Senior with regard to his occupation and residence
· 1820 - clerk - when his first daughter Charlotte Caroline was born; the family was living at Sidney Place, Chelsea, Middlesex.
· 1828 - coal merchant - when his two sons, Frederick and Charles, were christened; the family was now living at Seymour Street, in Walworth.

From Court Transcripts of the Old Bailey, February 28th 1848.
No. 870: JOHN HURTON, was indicted for embezzlement. Mr Dearsley conducted the Prosecution John Marvin: Messrs. Rankin and Co. are my solicitors. On 15th Dec.1846, I paid into the firm 2£.8s.7d - I received a receipt - this is it - I cannot say who gave it me. Charles Rankin Vickerman. I am a partner in the house of Rankin and Vickerman. The prisoner was our clerk in Dec., 1846 - on the receipt of money, it was his duty to enter it in the cash receipt-book, and pay it in to the banker's - the book is here - on the 16th Dec, 1846, here is no entry of 2£.8s.7d, nor since - this receipt is the prisoner's writing. Cross-examined by Mr. Ballantine. Q. Was the prisoner employed in any other way? A. No - he left our employ before we were aware of this - he had no private work to do for me - he may have bought little things when I was going into the country - we have about fifteen or sixteen clerks always engaged - if a clerk had signed a receipt, when he had not received the money, it would be contrary to rule - if he had received this, he should pay it into the banker's unless it was very late. John Marvin. I am clerk at Messrs. Hoare's the bankers. On 16th Dec. 1846, 100£ was paid into our house on account of Messrs. Rankin by Mr. Charles Primm - there is no such sum as 2£.8s.7d in my book - I cannot answere to any other day. GUILTY No. 871. JOHN HURTON, was again indicted for embezzlement 6£.16s.6d., also, stealing 8£. 4s.; the monies of Charles Rankin and another, his masters to both of which he pleaded Guilty. Aged 30. - Recommended to mercy by the Prosecutor - Confined Six Month No. 872. FREDERICK DANIEL COOPER, embezzlement Mr Dearsley conducted the Prosecution John Begeant. I live at Richmond, in Surrey. On 18th Jan. I paid the prisoner 3£.10s., at Mr Rankin's office - this is the receipt I got. Cross-examined by Mr. Duncan. Q. You were tenant to some clients of these gentleman? A. Yes - I paid one quarter's rent, at 14£ due at Michaelmas - if I had paid the whole it would have been 7£. Augustus Bury. On 19th Jan. I paid the prisoner 11£.10s. - I received this memorandum for it. Cross-examined. Q. You were also tenant to some clients of these gentlemen? A. Yes - the rent of my house is 90£ a year - the prisoner called on me, and received 11£.10s., and I told him I would call on the following Monday, and pay the remainder of the quarter's rent. Charles Rankin Vickerman. I am one of the firm of Rankin and Vickerman. The prisoner was in our service in Jan. - on his receiving these two sums his duty was to have made a short memorandum in the book, and have handed the money to our cashier - the memorandum has not been made. Cross-examined: Q. Who was your cashier on 18th Jan.? A. Mr. Walker - he has been our cashier since the beginning of this year - Mr. Hurton preceded him, - I think it was in the early part of Feb. that I was first aware that these two sums had not been accounted for - to the best of my recollection Mr. Johns first informed me of it - I said he had better ascertain to what extent it had gone, and let me know - he afterwards told me the prisoner had made up a story of his having been robbed of this money, and that he had produced a portion of a bank-note, stating that the other part had been forcibly taken from him - I do not recollect that he told me Cooper had directed him to come and tell his master - I am not aware that the prisoner used to make disbursements for the office - it was not his duty - an account for stamps was shown to me - I did not admit it; I expressed surprise, because we generally have a stock of them in the office. James Walker. I am cashier in the house of Messrs. Rankin and Co. On 18th and 19th Jan. The prisoner did not account to me for 3£.10s. or 11£.10s., nor has he since he said he was unwell, left for a few days, and never returned. Cross-examined: Q. You have been cashier a short time? A. Yes - I commenced this year - it is the duty of the persons who receive money to make a return of it to me - I am not aware that if they receive a moiety they keep it till they have received the whole - it was not the collector's custom to keep what they had by them for a day or two till the persons paid the remainder - I cannot swear that it was not sometimes done. Francis Morris (policeman, T 70). I took the prisoner in Feb - I told him it was on a charge of embezzling several sums, to the amount of 15£ of his employers - he said "No., it is not so much as that" - he said he intended to go to the office tomorrow to explain it, and if that was not sufficient to give himself up. Thomas Johns: I am managing-clerk in the house of Rankin and Co. The prisoner has been clerk there some time - Hurton lodged in my house - he was cashier up to about 1st. Jan - the prisoner was appointed to collect rent of a house eight or nine months ago - he came to me on 1st Feb and said that Hurton's account were very imperfect - I do not recollect that he had come to me before that - I said "Go to him about it" - I believe I was present on 18th Jan - I remember Mr Begeant coming to pay some rent - I think the prisoner asked me if I would take it - I said "No, I shall not take it; it is not part of my duty to take money" - I said he had better take it - Hurton was at home ill then, and I think he was cashier till the time he left, about 27th or 28th Jan. - I do not remember Mr. Burt coming to pay his rent - I remember the prisoner saying about a week after he left the office, that Mr. Burt had come to pay his rent and he had 14£.10s from him- he did not say that on 19th Jan - I did not know for nearly a week that he had received that money - I do not remember the firm being very pressing about Watt's rent - I have nothing to do with the cash payments - I think the prisoner left about the beginning of Feb. - he never wrote to me - he came to my house, I think on the evening of 8th Feb, more like a mad man than a sane man - he said he had received some money, and had been robbed - he produced a portion of a 5£ note - the number had been torn off - he wished me to acquaint the firm - I said, of course if he wished it I must do it - I told him about the beginning of Feb. that the firm desired Oliver's account to be made up - I was directed to make out the bill of costs - I told Walker I was going to make out the bill, and the prisoner came to me with a bit of paper in his hand, and said there was something wrong about it with Hurton - I told him to go to him about it. (Mr. Dearsley here withdrew from the prosecution.) NOT GUILTY |
