These last survive as Nos. 35–71 (odd) Kenway Road (Nos. 57–61 rebuilt). They were erected in c. 1807–10, (ref. 8) each one bay wide and three storeys high (Plate 98b, fig. 97). Before it was renamed and renumbered as part of Kenway Road in 1908 the row was called Providence Terrace, but that aboriginal-sounding name was given it only in 1851: at first it was termed Manor Terrace (perhaps to acknowledge the significance of the manor house in Earl's Court Road for this line of route, perhaps merely to echo Smith's Manor Terrace in the King's Road), and then Earl's Court Terrace. (ref. 8) Under this name Faulkner called it ‘pleasantly situated’ in 1820. (ref. 11) The list of ratepayers about then suggests some respectability, as half a dozen of the names seem likely to be those of owners of property locally, or friends or relations of the Smiths. (ref. 8) The designer of these simple houses is not known, although in Chelsea, at least, Smith's architect may have been a Nicholas Handford.

Court Case 17 May 1867 (age 39) London, Middlesex
Court case involving Alexander Hoadly (Snr) and his nephew - probably Henry Hoadly, who was a coach painter / herald painter. Reported in the London Times.
The Times: Friday May 17th 1867 - Page 11

HOADLEY V. JENKINS

Mr Beasley was council for the plaintiff; and Mr Joyce and Mr. Rigby for the defendant.
The action was brought by the plaintiff, a coachbuilder at Kensington, to recover 76l. 12s. for a waggonette and repairs thereto. The defendant pleaded his discharge under a composition deed. The plaintiff had refused to assent to the deed, but the requisite majority of creditors has assented to a composition of 2s. 6d. in the pound, and the only question in this case was whether the amount the plaintiff was entitled to had been tendered to him or to a person authorised by him to receive it. The tender, in point of fact, was made to the plaintiff's nephew, who was in his employ as a coach painter, but had no authority to cast in this matter. The nephew refused to take the money, and it was not left.
The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff, finding that the nephew was not authorised to accept the tender.

"Nos. 40–52 Abingdon Road were very successful, all being occupied in 1853 and Nos. 65–75 Abingdon Villas were also successful with the public: Nos. 77–85 Abingdon Villas, on the other hand, for some reason remained unoccupied until 1860. (ref. 35) The thinness of the walls at Nos. 6 and 8 Cope Place troubled the District Surveyor. (ref. 61) J. J. Watts, the purchaser of the site of Nos. 35–45 Earl's Court Road, at first and perhaps half-punningly called the houses and shops there Wattsfield Terrace.

Text From Source: I found your website quite by accident - congratulations on a fantastic job with the family tree!

I am a decendent of Henry Hoadly and Louisa Davis; their daughter Sophia Hoadly (married to William Henry Neill) was my grandfather's mother. I may be able to get some additional information on Sophia Hoadly Neill if you are interested. She died before my mother was born (or shortly thereafter)
