Note on Husband: Frederick Dibsdall HAZARD (1)

Dear Graham

Your reference on your website to a surname of Dibsdall Hazard interests me. My Dibsdall family originate in Somerset and the Dorset town of Sherborne. My great, great, great grandfather was Thomas Dibsdall; I descend from his son Thomas. Thomas had a sister called Harriot Deane Dibsdall who was born in 1803 in Sherborne. She was married in 1833 at St. Marylebone to a Robert Coleman. I am wondering if other siblings of Harriot also moved to London at that time. Dibsdall is a very unusual surname; most people with whom I have come into contact with who are researching the name have some ancestral lines that link with mine.

Sincerely

Julie Oliver

Note on Husband: Frederick Dibsdall HAZARD (2)

I have a feeling that Frederick Dibsdall Hazard may in fact be the illegitemate son of a James Dibsdall and Hannah Hazard.

Both appear in Sherborne in the 1841 census - Hannah age 40 with a boy Frederick age 8.

James

Note on Wife: Sophia Still HOADLY (1) - shared note

At their marriage, both Sophia and Frederick give their address as Hartland Road.

In the 1861 census, she is living with her mother at 3a Orchard Terrace (cottages?), in the same house as Alfred Cross, her future husband, and his family.

[RG9/19/74]

In the 1871 census, she is living with her mother at 3a Orchard Terrace, in the same house as Alfred Cross, her future husband, and his family.

[RG10/31/101]

By 1881, Sophia has married Alfred, and they are living at 78 Abingdon Villas, Kensington, with two of his sons by his former marriage.

[RG11/24/17]

In the 1901 census Sophia has her "Grand daughter" living with her - presumably her step Grand daughter.

This is Sophia H. Cross born circa 1887 in Chelsea, London.

Note on Wife: Sophia Still HOADLY (2)

It would appear that Sophia was pregnant with her daughter Sophia Still Hazard when she married Frederick Dibsdall Hazard.

The child Sophia's birth was registered in the September quarter of 1858.

The parents were married on the 22nd August 1858 - so Sophia would have been very pregnant.

Frederick's death was registered in the December quarter of 1858, and the child Sophia's death was registered in the March quarter of 1859.

It would seem poor Sophia Still Hazard lived through a very difficult and tragic year.

An "S.Headley" is recorded as present at the death of Sophia's husband, Frederick Dibsdall Hazard - some spelling errors on his death certificate. Presumably she was Sophia Maria Hoadly, Sophia Still Hazard's mother.

It would seem that Sophia, Frederick and her mother Sophia Hoadly were all perhaps living at this address at 52 Hartland Road in 1858.

I wonder if this was also the residence of Sophia Hazard's brother, William Hoadly prior to his marriage to Margaret Brodie in 1857, as Hartland Road is given as his address on his marriage certificate.

In 2008 I went to visit the area, and found that number 52 Hartland road is no longer there. I would think it would have been to the left as one faces the church.

It is possible that William ran a boarding house after his father's death in 1854 - there is a mention of one such in a directory.

At any event Sophia Still Hazard and her mother were in Kensington at Abingdon Villas by the 1861 census.

Here is a description of a property next door but one to 23 Endell Street, where William Hoadly and his family were living in 1851. The family shared a premises with three other families. It is unclear what their circumstances were at this time. As they had experienced bankruptcy in Leamington in the 1840s, it is reasonable to suppose that their circumstances may not have been good.

In the same census, number 13 is described as a "lodging" - so maybe number 23 was a lodging house.

It seems the St Giles Workhouse must also have been very close.

XLIX.—No. 25, ENDELL STREET.
Ground Landlords.

The Trustees of the late John King, Esq.
General description and date of structure.

Plots of land on both sides of Belton Street were leased for building by Sir John Brownlow, apparently in 1682, (fn. 1) and a stone tablet (fn. 2) gave the date of the street's formation as 1683. The name obviously refers to the seat of the Brownlow family at Belton in Lincolnshire.

About 1846 the street was widened on the eastern side and renamed Endell Street, after the Rev. James Endell Tyler, then Rector of St. Giles.

At the expiration of the original leases in 1728, Peter Walter purchased portions of the Brownlow property, including a house in Belton Street "in the occupation of Daniel Holme, (fn. 3) surgeon, and used by him as a bagnio." (fn. 4) Holme's Bagnio was, it appears, the fourth house (inclusive) from the corner of Castle Street, and is therefore to be identified with the present No. 25, Endell Street.

At the rear of these premises is an apartment, about 16 feet by 9 feet, which is known as "Queen Anne's Bath." It has a coved ceiling surmounted by a small lantern, and on each side bull's eye windows are constructed in the coved part of the ceiling. The roof is covered with tiles. The form of the chamber can be seen by Plate 37, which is taken from a water-colour drawing made by J. W. Archer in 1844. There are some blue and white tiles still affixed to the walls, but there is insufficient evidence to enable a definite date to be given to these. The level of the top of the steps is about 10 feet below the present street pavement. The floor of the bath is said to be about 18 feet below that level, but it cannot be seen as the bath is filled with soil and rubbish to an estimated depth of about 8 feet. The structure is dilapidated and floored over at about 18 inches below pavement level, and is now used as an iron merchant's store.

Tradition asserts that the bath was frequented by Queen Anne, (fn. 5) a statement that it is not possible to confirm. The apartment is, however, very possibly a relic of the old "bagnio."
The Council's collection contains:—

(fn. 6) No. 25, Endell Street—Queen Anne's Bath (photograph).
No. 41, Endell Street—Exterior (photograph).

3 The ratebooks from 1730 (earliest extant) to 1746 show "Daniel Hahn," possibly a more correct form of the name, at this house.
4 Indenture dated 27th May, 1728, between Peter Walter and Nicholas Lovell (Middlesex Registry Memorials, 1728, VI., 15).
