Your reference on your website to a surname of Dibsdall Hazard interests me. My Dibsdall family originate in Somerset and the Dorset town of Sherborne.My great, great, great grandfather was Thomas Dibsdall; I descend from his son Thomas. Thomas had a sister called Harriot Deane Dibsdall who was born in 1803 in Sherborne. She was married in 1833 at St. Marylebone to a Robert Coleman. I am wondering if other siblings of Harriot also moved to London at that time. Dibsdall is a very unusual surname; most people with whom I have come into contact with who are researching the name have some ancestral lines that link with mine.

I have a feeling that Frederick Dibsdall Hazard may in fact be the illegitemate son of a James Dibsdall and Hannah Hazard.

Both appear in Sherborne in the 1841 census - Hannah age 40 with a boy Frederick age 8.

At their marriage, both Sophia and Frederick give their address as Hartland Road.

 

In the 1861 census, she is living with her mother at 3a Orchard Terrace (cottages?), in the same house as Alfred Cross, her future husband, and his family.

By 1881, Sophia has married Alfred, and they are living at 78 Abingdon Villas, Kensington, with two of his sons by his former marriage.

In the 1901 census Sophia has her "Grand daughter" living with her - presumably her step Grand daughter.

This is Sophia H. Cross born circa 1887 in Chelsea, London.

It would appear that Sophia was pregnant with her daughter Sophia Still Hazard when she married Frederick Dibsdall Hazard.

 

The child Sophia's birth was registered in the September quarter of 1858.

 

The parents were married on the 22nd August 1858 - so Sophia would have been very pregnant.

 

Frederick's death was registered in the December quarter of 1858, and the child Sophia's death was registered in the March quarter of 1859.

 

It would seem poor Sophia Still Hazard lived through a very difficult and tragic year.

 

An "S.Headley" is recorded as present at the death of Sophia's husband, Frederick Dibsdall Hazard - some spelling errors on his death certificate. Presumably she was Sophia Maria Hoadly, Sophia Still Hazard's mother.

 

It would seem that Sophia, Frederick and her mother Sophia Hoadly were all perhaps living at this address at 52 Hartland Road in 1858.

 

I wonder if this was also the residence of Sophia Hazard's brother, William Hoadly prior to his marriage to Margaret Brodie in 1857, as Hartland Road is given as his address on his marriage certificate.

 

In 2008 I went to visit the area, and found that number 52 Hartland road is no long there. I would think it would have been to the left as one faces

 

It is possible that William ran a boarding house after his father's death in 1854 - there is a mention of one such in a directory.

 

At any event Sophia Still Hazard and her mother were in Kensington at Abingdon Villas by the 1861 census.
