Note on Husband: Thomas COOPER (1) - shared note
Email from Ainslie Sharpe Sun 20/04/2003:
I think that I might have stumbled across the family that could be ours - but there is no proof and only a "gut" feeling. See what you think.
I had always (with no logic) presumed that Thomas Cooper and Sarah Hellyer were young - ie born about 1780.
However, based on the fact that Thomas & Sarah had only 4 children that we know about, not the 10 - 12 as many of their contemporaries had, they could have been older when they married.
I have always been intrigued with the parallels in the lives of a William Varlo Hellyer, Solicitor, and Frederick Hellyer Cooper and thought there must be a connection some where.
William Varlo Hellyer was christened at St Mary's Portsea on 29 Mary 1797, was married at St George's Hanover Square on19 January 1818, and their first child was christened at St Luke's Chelsea on 7 December 1820.
Frederick Hellyer Cooper was christened at Droxford on 3 June 1800, (as you know his parents were married at St Mary's Portsea), he was married at St George's Hanover Square on 22 February 1819, and their first child was christened at St Luke's Chelsea on 16 August 1820.
As you know, one of the sponsor at Frederick Hellyer Cooper's christening was an Elizabeth Cooper, who must be a connection somehow.
I have found a family of Hellyers - Father William Hellyer and mother Elizabeth Cleverly (or Cleaverly) who married in Portchester on 4 January 1762.
Their children are: Unknown female Hellyer, christened Portchester 5 September 1762. }
All this information is from Batch C062151Christenings of John Hellyer, christened Portchester 27 May 1764} the Parish of Portchester, Hampshire.
Sarah Hellyer, christened Portchester 23 January 1766}
Philip Hellyer, christened Portchester 20 December 1767}
John Hellyer, above, is the father of William Varlo Hellyer - so if this Sarah Hellyer is "ours" William Varlo and Frederick would have been cousins.
Sarah would have been 33 years old at the time of her marriage, and 40 years old at the time of the birth of Elisabeth Jane Cooper in 1806.
[NB - an email received in 2008 precludes the above being "our" Sarah!

Subject: Hellyer in Portchester
Hi Graham,
I found your web page by Googling. I thought you may be interested in the fact that I have the will of John Cleverly yeoman of Portchester, Sarah Hellyer's uncle, the brother of her mother Elizabeth. (Hampshire RO reference: 1792B07). The will was written 29 Dec 1791 and mentions:
Nephews: John and Phillip Hellyer
Nieces: Mary Hellyer
Sarah the wife of John Stint of Bourn in the County of Sussex, bricklayer
Nancy the wife of Mr Pain of Emsworth, Mariner.
I also have the wills of John's parents, William Cleverly and Elizabeth Cleverly (nee Langford).
William Hellyer witnessed William Cleverly's will on 6 Oct 1761 (not yet married to Elizabeth Cleverly).
Elizabeth Hellyer (wife of William and eldest daughter of William and Elizabeth Cleverly) was married to William Hellyer at the time her mother wrote her will (30 Dec 1777) but a widow at the time of the granting of probate on her mother's will (24 Sep 1781)
Hope that helps a little,
Dasha" ]
Among the many Thomas Coopers, there are some possibilities as well, but which one is any one's guess! There is some 8 children christened at St Mary's Portsea with the father's name given as John Cooper, (no mother's name listed in the Parish records) born between 1754 and 1761 - obviously all cannot be from the one family!!
They are:
Betty Cooper, christened 13 January 1754
Thomas Cooper, christened 18 May 1755
Elizabeth Cooper, christened 1 July 1755
John Cooper, christened 15 August 1756
Thomas Cooper, christened 19 September 1756
George Cooper, christened 27 November 1757
William Cooper, christened 25 December 1757
Molly Cooper christened 11 January 1761
Just may be, those in red, are "ours" and perhaps either George or William.
However if this is our Thomas Cooper, it rules out any connection with the Tho. Cooper who signed all those Census sheets in 1841 - he would have been about 85 year old!!!
There are some other Coopers in Broughton, father Thomas Cooper, mother Sarah Thomas Cooper, christened 7 May 1761
Mary Cooper, christened 17 April 1763
William Cooper, christened 4 January 1765
Elizabeth Cooper, christened 23 December 1768
Robert Cooper, christened 23 December 1768
Then there is another Thomas Cooper, but no sister Elizabeth - again father Thomas Cooper, mother Sarah, all christened at Portchester (same as the Hellyers)
Thomas Cooper, christened 21 February 1768
John Cooper, christened 21 September 1770
William Cooper, christened 15 September 1772.
I have just had a horrible thought - may be Elizabeth Cooper is a sister-in-law - although you would think that the brother would also be included, if this was the case rather than William Augustus Bettesworth and John Prior.
(Incidentally, did you know that a William Augustus Bettesworth was christened at St Mary's in Portsea in 1736. There is also a John Prior christened there in 1767!).
I don't know about these Coopers, but I feel that there may definitely be something in the Hellyer and Portchester connection above.
I think this lot is definitely in the same league as the Maynes in Ireland.
Best left alone!!!
