Note on Husband: Robert Eric ROBERTS (1) - shared note

Known as "Eric".

Born at 3.45pm., and baptised by the Rev. W. Hinton Jones.(On a Monday).

By the 1891 Census, his parents and their three children had moved just up the road to a larger house, newly built, at 6 New Street. [RG12/2113/6/6]

Wilding's Directory for Shewsbury has Eric at 20 Benyon Street in 1928 and 1931.

In 1936 onwards he is at 4 Victoria Street. It is likely the family moved from 20 Benyon Street to 4 Victoria Street about 1934, after the death of Annie Roberts, Eric's mother. Eric's brother Trevor moved into 20 Benyon Street at this time after his marriage to Myrtle Ellis.

Note on Husband: Robert Eric ROBERTS (2)

Note by Graham Hoadly:

Of course I never knew my Grandad, as he died in the May of 1955 just before I was born in the July. My middle name Eric was given for him.

My sisters, however, did know him, and recall an austere somewhat humourless man who when they went up to Shrewsbury for the annual summer holiday used to set them sums to do - and they had to do them!

Note on Husband: Robert Eric ROBERTS (3)

This was an obituary published after his death:

"Mr. R.E. Roberts We regret to record the death of Mr. R. E. Roberts, Senior Rental Clerk, after a long illness which he bore with characteristic fortitude. Mr. Roberts was sixty-four and was due for retirement after being at Shrewsbury gas works since 1907. He had been successively Weigh Office Clerk, Meter Reader and Collector, Rentals Clerk and Cashier, and was one of those reliable all-round men so typical of Gas Office training. We shall miss that wealth of experience and kindly philosophy which calmed many a trying moment and helped us ride the storm. His example of conscientious application and promptitude in arriving will be remembered as part of the rules of conduct which he delighted in reciting to us from the old days. We express our deep sympathy to Mrs. Roberts and his married son and daughter.C.G.B."

This notice also appeared in a local newspaper:

"MR. R. E. ROBERTS The funeral took place at the general cemetery on Friday of Mr. Robert Eric Roberts, 4 Victoria Street, Castlefields, Shrewsbury, who died at home on the previous Monday. Aged 64, Mr. Roberts was on the clerical staff at Stanley House. His hobby was woodwork. A native of Shrewsbury, Mr. Roberts was a member of the Gas Works sports and social club for many years. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Howell Williams. Chief mourners were: Mr. Eric Roberts (son) [sic], Mr. Trevor Roberts, Mr. William Roberts, and Mr. Archibald Roberts (brothers), Mr. Eric Roberts (nephew). Funeral arrangements were by H. Owen and Son Ltd."

Note on Wife: Evelyn May DEAKIN (1)

It is difficult trying to work out who brought Eve up, and why.

She was born in Pentre, Great Ness on 20th January 1895.

GREAT NESS, Shropshire

"GREAT NESS, (or Ness, Magna), a parish in the hundred of Pimhill, county Salop, 8 miles N.W. of Shrewsbury, its post town, and 3½ S.W. of Baschurch railway station. The parish, which is situated on the road from Shrewsbury to Oswestry, is of large extent, containing the townships of Nesscliff, Hopton, Kinton, Willcot, Felton-Butler, and Alderton. The surface is undulating, and nearly in the centre of the parish is a rocky cliff called Ness Cliff. The soil consists of sandy loam with a subsoil of sand rock."

[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868)

Transcribed by Colin Hinson ©2003]

She was baptised by her mother, the unmarried Agnes Ann Deakin, on 8th Feb 1895 at Pentre, Shropshire.

Her birth was registered on 29th March 1895. No father is listed on her birth certificate or her baptismal certificate.

Her mother, Agnes, was living in Ruyton XI Towns at the time of Evelyn's registration. Agnes lists her occupation on Evelyn's birth certificate as a Domestic Servant.

It is possible at the time of Evelyn's registration, Agnes and her daughter may have been living with Agnes's own mother Lucy at Vine Buildings, Ruyton XI Towns.

There are two Carte de Visite photos taken in the mid 1890s (judging by the dress) of Agnes Ann Deakin, and of Evelyn Deakin aged about 2 or 3 - therefore taken circa 1897 / 8/

In the latter photo there is another little girl of a similar age to Eve. Could this be a girl with whom she was living at the time? A possibility is Minnie Elizabeth Jones born 1896, who was the daughter of Joseph Jones and his wife Elizabeth Mary Jones (nee Lloyd).

In the 1901 census taken on the night of 31st March 1901, Evelyn is living at Lower Hopton, Great Ness, with Joseph Jones (castrator and vet) and his children, Mary Jane, Frederick Thomas and Joseph Richard Jones.

On the 1901 census night, Joseph's youngest daughter Minnie Elizabeth Jones is staying with her grandmother, the widowed Jane Lloyd at Pentre Farm, the place where Evelyn May was born.

There is a definite connection between Evelyn May Deakin and the Lloyd family of Pentre.

The widowed Jane Lloyd of Pentre Farm, was married to Joseph Lloyd, farmer of Pentre and Nesscliffe, Great Ness. The couple and their family were to be found farming at Pentre in the 1861/71 and 81 censuses, and at Nesscliff in the 1891 census.

Joseph and Jane Lloyd had six children:

Hannah, Joseph & John Edward (twins), Edward, Richard Robert and Mary Elizabeth Lloyd.

The latter, Mary Elizabeth Lloyd was married to Joseph Jones (with whom Evelyn May was staying in the 1901 census).

Mary Elizabeth died sixteen days after the birth of her youngest daughter Minnie Elizabeth on 25 March 1896.

It is, to me, strange that my grandmother should have been staying at the home of a widowed man totally unconnected with her in 1901, when she was only six years old.

By the 1911 census, Evelyn May Deakin is working as a milliner (my mother said she was a milliner at Dyas's in Shrewsbury) boarding with John and Mary Jane Sales at 3 Hunter Street, Shrewsbury.

Also boarding with Mr & Mrs Sales are the sons of the late Joseph Jones and his wife Mary Elizabeth Jones (nee Lloyd), namely the orphaned Joseph Richard and Frederick Thomas Jones - the boys with whom she was living in the 1901 census.

Also in the 1911 census, the orphaned Minnie Elizabeth Jones (sister of Joseph Richard and Frederick Thomas Jones) was living at 1 Port Hill Gardens Shrewsbury, Shropshire with her cousin, James Kent Morris and his wife Catherine.

James Kent Morris's mother was Elizabeth (nee Jones) - sister of Joseph Jones (castrator) who married Elizabeth Mary Lloyd.

This suggests a definite and close connection.

Evelyn is mentioned in Hannah Lloyd's will of 1916:

"Unto my adopted niece Evelyn May Deakin of 3 Swan Hill Court, Shrewsbury I give and bequeath the sum of £10 (ten pounds).

I hereby direct that the Policies on my life which I hold in the Prudential Company be paid to my said niece Mary Jane Jones in order that she may provide mourning for each of my nieces and adopted niece above mentioned. The furniture I possess together with the residue of my estate and effectes I give and bequeath to be equally divided between the nephews and nieces and adopted niece aforementioned and I hereby appoint Mr Eric Roberts 4 Victoria Street Shrewsbury as Executor to this my Will.

Signed this 17th Day of January one thousand nine hundred and sixteen.

[signature of] Hannah Lloyd

Dated January 17th 1916"

I can't see what possible connection the LLoyds would have had with Evelyn, other than the fact that Elizabeth Mary was married to Joseph Jones. Clearly Elizabeth was not her mother. Why, then was Eve living with Joseph in 1901.he was a widower with three of his six children in the house at the time of the census. The eldest boy had always (mysteriously) been brought up by his great aunt Elizabeth Wragby

When Evelyn May Deakin married Robert Eric Roberts at Kinnerley Parish Church on 25th April 1920, the witnesses were Robert Eric's brother Trevor Victor Roberts, and also Joseph Lloyd - the son of Joseph and Jane Lloyd of Pentre Farm.

On her marriage registration Evelyn gives her address as "Grove Cottage, Pentre".

Joseph Lloyd lists this as his address in his will made on 21st October 1922. Grove cottage stands almost immediately opposite Pentre Farm.

Again, a strong connection is thereby suggested with the Lloyd and Jones family.

On her marriage registration, Evelyn states her father's name as John Jones, a farmer. Did she know this to be true, or was this an invention for respectability's sake?

I would suggest the latter to be unlikely, as on her own copy, she latterly added the surname "Deakin" to that of John Jones thereby making the name "John Jones Deakin".

Surely she would have done this at the time of the wedding if she wanted to maintain this sort of respectability? It was only later that the name Deakin was added to her own copy of her marriage certificate - perhaps to protect her secret from her children?

So - could the "John Jones" of Evelyn's marriage registration actually be a John Jones connected with the Jones family with whom she was living in the 1901 and 1911 census - or even Joseph Jones himself, father of John, Mary, Frederick, Joseph and Minnie?

This would seem a definite possibility, as why else would Evelyn be living with this family during the years of her childhood?

It is clear that after the registration of her baptism and birth, there is little to connect Evelyn with her mother's family.

These are the movements of Agnes Ann Deakin, her mother:

In 1891, she is living with her mother Lucy Deakin (nee Coles) step father John Owen the tailor at Vine Buildings, Ruyton XI Towns. Also at Vine Buildings are Agnes's half siblings Mary Deakin Owen (known as Polly) and John Edgar Owen.

In the 1901 census, Agnes is living as a parlour maid for James and Agnes Clegg at Palms Hill, Wem, Shropshire - clearly not in a position to have her daughter with her.

On the 4th September 1901, Agnes Ann Deakin married Joseph Owen, wine merchant's assistant of Oswestry, six months after the 1901 census.

Joseph Owen was the nephew of John Owen, Agnes's step father, the tailor of Ruyton XI Towns!

On 23rd May 1902, Agnes gave birth to Iris Lily Owen at 52 York Street, Oswestry.

On 16th November 1905, Agnes gave birth to Charles Deakin Owen at the same address.

It appears that neither Iris nor Charlie ever knew of the existence of their half sister, Evelyn May.

Ironically, there is a photograph of Agnes and her two children Iris and Charlie taken circa 1909, at Williams & Williams of 48 High Street Shrewsbury - the same photographer that took the portrait of her that Evelyn kept for most of her life, along with the one taken of her as a toddler.

It is not known whether any communication was ever maintained with Evelyn May and her mother Agnes or grandmother Lucy after her earliest years. It is doubtful. Certainly, Eve did not acknowledge the photo of her mother when she gave me the portrait towards the end of her life. She was brusque and dismissive, stating that she "couldn't remember" who the woman in the photo was.

it is my feeling - alas, probably never to be proved, that my grandmother, Evleyn May Deakin may have been the daughter of Agnes Ann Deakin and Joseph Jones. Possibly Agnes was working as a servant at the time of Evelyn's conception.

Another clue is that Joseph Jones and his family were (rather oddly) according to the birth certificate of John Edwards Jones in 1889, living at the Admiral Benbow Inn in Church Street where Joseph was the Innkeeper. An odd, as I say, diversion from his usual profession as a vet / castrator, but there it is. In July 1890, his daughter Mary Jane was born in Ruyton, which suggests the family may still have been at the Inn.

Sometime between 12th December 1888 and 1 March 1891, Lucy Deakin and her children moved to Vine Buildings, Ruyton, with her new partner, John Owen. Vine Buildings are at the end of Pound Lane, which is off Chuch Street in Ruyton - just around the corner from The Admiral Benbow Inn. It is conceivable, therefore, that Joseph Jones may have met Agnes Ann Deaking at the time he and his family were living in Ruyton.

Note on Wife: Evelyn May DEAKIN (2) - shared note

Known as "Eve".

She never really discussed her childhood, and it would seem that her Mother left her to be brought up in Pentre.

Whether those who brought her up were related or not is so far unclear.

Her Mother married in 1901, when Eve was six, but she clearly did not take Eve into her new family.

Eve and Eric were married in the presence of Trevor V. Roberts [Eric's brother] and Joseph Lloyd.

Eve recalled she and Eric cycled to the wedding together.

In the 1901 Census, Evelyn is described as a "visitor" at Lower Hopton, Great Ness, Shropshire - with the family of Joseph Jones (age 46 born Kinnerley) listed as a "Castrator" (Vet).

He is there with his daughter Mary Jane Jones age 10, born Ruyton XI Towns, his two sons Frederick Thomas Jones age 9, born West Felton, and Joseph Ro. Jones age 7, born Great Ness.

Note by Graham Hoadly:

My Grandma Roberts was a complete contrast to my Hoadly Grandparents, but I loved her too in my way and always looked forward to our family summer holidays at her house in Shrewsbury - number 4 Victoria Street, just down from the Prison!

She was a stouter woman than my Grandma Hoadly, and had lovely soft naturally wavy grey hair that I often used to catch her primping in the mirror.

She had a large matronly bust that rested rather low, due, I presume to an absence of the customary support lingerie!

She was also somewhat broad in the beam in those days, and I recall getting a terrible shaking when my sister Marion and I dissolved into muffled hysteria as she, as was her wont, bent down to pick up the teapot from the hearth, providing a somewhat ominous (and amusing to us kids) view!

Marion was older and better able to control her mirth, but I found it practically impossible. Grandma knew we were laughing - probably at her - but she didn't know why. She took me out of the room and gave me a good shaking, but, of course, I couldn't possibly tell her what I was laughing at!

I think she was naturally quite a nosy woman, and therefore had a fear of others finding out anything about her. Whenever I used to go down to number 9 Victoria Street, to visit my Great Aunt Myrtle (of whom Grandma was oddly suspicious - perhaps a bit jealous) she invariably would admonish me

"Don't go telling them any of our business!" - which always perplexed me as I didn't think I knew any business worthwhile telling!

She could be quite strict with us children. If we should say we wanted something she would say:

"'I want!' 'I want!' - I want a new carpet but I shan't 'ave it!"

She was also rather prudish - if something came onto the television that she considered "unsuitable" she would get up with alacrity, switch off the TV and say:

"That's what your Uncle Archie and I call one of THOSE programmes"!

Nevertheless she did once say to my sister, Eluned who was going through some marital trouble at the time:

"If I had my time again, I would live with a man before I married him!" which was something of a shock to us - but a refreshingly unexpected viewpoint on her part.

She used to enjoy a chatty weekly paper called "The Weekly News" and she again surprised me, when laughing, she read out a letter from a woman who had apparently done some preparation of a room, prior to calling in a decorator. She had telephoned the decorator saying "I've stripped and am ready for you to come over"!

Not being famous for her sense of humour, or her

She used to make us laugh when she regularly and quite seriously advocated the female family members - particularly my Mother - always to have a hatpin about their person, should they at any time be approached by some sex-crazed man!

She loved a bargain, and used invariably, should we be going into Town in Shrewsbury, exhort us to visit the "Cheap-Jacks in the market". My mother could be, if anything, even more snobby than her own Mother ... and regularly ignored the invitation!

Note on Wife: Evelyn May DEAKIN (5)

There is a photograph of Evelyn in which she is wearing a nurse's uniform. No-one left aliove (2014) recalls her ever mentioning that she had nursed, and looking at the photograph, it is possible she may have done so - possibly as a volunteer - during WW1.

I have her autograph book containg many autographs from friends mostly during the WW1 period, including one from S. Simmonds - Shirlett [ "With love and good wishes From S. Simmonds, Shirlett, Shropshire 25.5.16"]

and May Ducken - Shirlett Sanatorium:

["Here's to the dove

That flies above

That never sheds a feather

If I can't have the boy I love

I'll go without for ever

May Ducken

Shirlett Sanatorium

21/6/16"]

Is it posible that Evelyn worked at some point during WW1 at Shirlett Sanatorium, explaining the photograph of her in nurse's uniform?25

It would appear, comparing it with a later copy of the certificate obtained and dated 1955 that the Surname "Deakin" had been added, and would therefore not be in the original Parish Register entry. Also the 1920 certicicate does not list the witnesses - therefore, I would suggest that the 1855 copy is the true version.]
