Note on Husband: William Henry NEILL - shared note

In the 1881 census, he was living with his parents in Blue Lion Road, St Pancras.

[RG11/0193/35/10]

Note on Wife: Sophia HOADLY (1) - shared note

Who was Annie Hoadly - a witness at Sophia's wedding? Could she be a wife of Alfred, Thomas one of her brothers?

The 1881 census index lists a Sophia Hadley age 16 as a servant at 25 Church Street, Chelsea, born in Kensington. [RG11/0076/40/28].

Note on Wife: Sophia HOADLY (2)

I am a decendent of Henry Hoadly and Louisa Davis; their daughter Sophia Hoadly (married to William Henry Neill) was my grandfather's mother. I may be able to get some additional information on Sophia Hoadly Neill if you are interested. She died before my mother was born (or shortly thereafter) but my mother remembers hearing a few things about her.

Yes, I am the granddaughter of Frederick William Neill. My mother, Margaret (she's 86, I'm 44, so I'm the late in life baby) was his daughter. She married my dad, an American GI, during WWII and came to him home in Alabama (of all places) after the war. She had a younger brother, Ronnie, who sadly was killed in North Africa during the war.

I am in daily contact with my mother and I will get my facts together about Sophia. I'll have to the get the story straight on this, but it is my understanding that Sophia and Henry ran a boarding house somewhere near the theater district in London or theater performers stayed in her boarding house. She contracted tuberculosis and passed away at a fairly young age. I do have a photo of Henry Neill that I can borrow from her and scan and e-mail to you. We don't seem to have any photos of Sophia.

In addition to my grandfather, Sophia and Henry also had a daughter, Lillie who married Albert Jones. Uncle Albert was a tailor and had a shop - oops, can't remember where. My Auntie Lillie was short, stocky, and a fantastic cook (I haven't been to England in 20 years, but the last time I was there we visited Auntie Lillie in Devon and even then in her advanced years she was an excellent cook) - these are traits I assume she inherited from her mother. They had two sons but my mother has lost contact with them over the years.9

Note on Wife: Sophia HOADLY (3)

Graham:

I spoke with my mother and told her about finding you all - she was really amazed and quite taken aback. Sometimes the globe gets a little smaller.....

She remembers that her grandparents, Henry and Sophia (pronounced So-FI-ah and not like Sophia Loren, as I would say) lived on Panton Street. As I told you before, she ran a boarding house across from some theaters. Apparently a famous actor, Jack Buchanon (have you heard of him) stayed there for a time. Sophia contracted tuberculosis and died in 1922 when my mother was only 2 years old. My mom has never met any of Sophia's siblings - in fact I don't think she knew much about them at all. She does remember hearing my Auntie Lillie talking about her aunts who were in the tailoring or dressmaking business (which makes sense since my Auntie Lillie's husband, Albert, was a tailor; perhaps they introduced her to Uncle Albert or his family; Liliie and Albert lived in Harrow where he had a shop; she eventually moved to Devon).

I don't ever remember hearing either one of my grandparents talking about Henry or Sophia but I suppose by the time I came along and was old enough to ask questions, Henry and Sophia had both been dead for many years. My grandparents were of the quasi-Victorian sort of non-emotional stiff upper lip types and really didn't talk about the old days that much. My grandfather was in the motorcycle business - he was a service manager for AJ&S Matchless motorbikes and raced motorbikes in his youth. Growing up my mother lived in Bexleyheath in Kent; they moved to Welling just before WWII. That house was bombed but was rebuilt and my grandparents lived there until their deaths ...

Where did all the other Hoadly's end up - in London or thereabouts? It seems like they had lived in the same general area of London for years as had the Neill's. Henry Neill's father had been a master chimney sweep (I will never look at the chimney sweep scene in Mary Poppins the same way again!!) He's the Henry we have a photo of - not Henry Hoadly - sorry in my excitement I got my Henry's mixed up. He was a very short man so I can assume that Sophia was not a tall woman either.

When you get a chance, give me a brief rundown and the other Hoadly siblings - perhaps something will spark my mother's memory.

God bless and have a Merry Christmas!

Karen
