RECORDS OF BLACKNEY'S FORGE, CHISLEHURST 173 [n.d.]

These documents are held at Bromley Public Libraries, Local Studies and Archives

Source of acquisition: Presented to the Library in 1973 by Mr. E. Thompson of Chislehurst, through Mr. T.A. Bushell.

Administrative history:

The Blackney family operated forges in the Chislehurst area from the late 18th century to about 1870. These two volumes are the only records of their work known to survive and were rescued from a bonfire. There are also extracts from an earlier account book (now lost) which began in 1792.

It appears that the family came originally from Berkshire, for Samuel Blackney of Chislehurst, blacksmith, stated in a settlement examination on 6 October 1783 that he had been born in Speen, near Newbury, and had served his father there in the manner of an apprentice. He was married in St Mary Cray, probably before 1780. (613/2 p.321)

The Samuel and Thomas Blackney whose accounts we have probably belonged to a later generation. Members of the family at one time or another operated three forges, in High Street and Perry Street, Chislehurst, and on St Pauls Cray Common.

Some notes on the family and their forges, with extracts from the earlier account book, were prepared by Mr Bushell, and are available in the Local Studies Library. (L 37.6)

The scope of their work ranged beyond horseshoes, harness and farm machinery to veterinary care e.g. 'bleeding horse & 1 dose of Physic 3s 6d' (173/1 F.213 r) and 'bleeding a cow 2s' (173/1 f.213r, 24 1) and a wide variety of ironwork. A few examples are :

'2 new keys, cleaning and repairing 2 locks, taking off and refixing 2s' (173/1 f. 122 r)

'Drilling out old screws. 7 new ditto and fixing on top of boiler 3s 6d' (173/1 f. 131 1)

'2 hand hooks for orange tubs 3s 6d' (173/1 f. 39r)

Mending and repaired bell wire in bedroom 2s' (173/1 f. 122 r)

'Mending 2 coffee pots 1s' (173/1 f. 213 r)

The ledger records the accounts of regular customers. It is foliated, the number, which applies to the facing right and left hand pages, being written in the top right-hand corner of each right-hand page. The volume begins with a list of customers, and the folio numbers of their accounts. They included the more prominent local residents, and among names noted were Sir Herbert Jenner, Mr Bascomb of the 'manor house', the Hon. Miss Townshend of Scadbury Park and Mrs Martin of Camden Place. Some of their other customers are listed among the Chislehurst tradesmen in Kelly's Directory of the Home Counties, 1856.

Work was also done for the Rev. Francis Dawson, rector until 1846, for the National School, and for parish officers and institutions - the surveyor, churchwardens and poorhouse.

There are notes of payment of accounts and some of the accounts were carried forward to other pages or a new book (not present) when space ran out. One account is continued to the end of 1852 (f. 178 r) but the others were apparently transferred to a new ledger by the end of 1850.

The entries in the odd job book are listed chronologically, with the name of the customer, nature of the job and the charge. Some jobs, such as paring out 8 feet, were charged as little as 2d. There are periodical notes of payment of bills, and entries transferred to 'big book' (the ledger). An example of this is a job done for Mr Francis, 5 Jan 1842: new piping for shop stove, 16s also entered in 173/1 f. 273 1.
