Note on Husband: Edward Augustus HOADLY (1) - shared note

Little so far is known about Edward Augustus.

He appears not to have married.

In 1871, Edward is living at 16 Park Street, Leamington Priors, Warwickshire, with his mother. [RG10/3195/1/10]

He was a painter (as in decorator, I imagine), and died young (of a heart attack) while working (presumably), on the re-decoration of His Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket, in 1902.

In the 1901 census Edward is listed as married to Jane - but so far I have found no record of such a marriage. Possible they were just living together.

Worcestershire Chronicle: 30 August 1902

"While a decorator named Edward Hoadley was descending from a scaffolding inside His Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket, he suddenly fell dead from heart disease."

Publication:Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser

Publication date:Saturday 30 August 1902

"Ed. Hoadley of 116 Stamford Street, Lambeth, dropped down dead from heart disease on Wednesday afternoon whilst descending some scaffolding inside His Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket, where was engaged in decorating work."

Publication: Midland Daily Telegraph

Publication date: Saturday 30 August 1902

"FALL IN A THEATRE

At Westminster an inquest was held touching the death of Edward Augustus Hoadley, aged thirty-nine, a painter, who died suddenly at His Majesty's Theatre. The evidence given went to show that on the day in question deceased was, with others, engaged in painting the interior of Mr Tree's dressing room at His Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket. He was standing on some staging erected about 12ft from the floor. Suddenly he reeled and fell from the staging to the floor, and was picked up dead. Medical evidence showed death to be due to rupture of an aneurism of the aorta, and the jury returned a verdict accordingly."

Note on Wife: Jane ?

This Jane is listed as Edward's wife in the 1901 census, and there is also a Jane living with Edward in the 1891 census - slightly different age, but quite possibly the same woman. There is no record of a marriage though - so it may be that they were just living together ...

After his death in 1902, there seems to be no further traceable record of this Jane, so she remains something of a mystery.
