Letter from Sheila Hoadly Barker to Graham Hoadly 08/05/1999
"Margaret was very conscious of her artificial arm, and the family didn't photograph her very often ... Her left arm was amputated following a cut on some nasty metal which turned septic in 1926.
She recovered from severe depression on becoming a Christian Scientist, and worked as companion/help to several 'well to do' elderly Christian Scientist ladies- in London, Harrogate, Sheringham and Windermere. Her hobby was embroidery, at which she became proficient with her one hand.
During the War, her work was accepted for sale at a London store.
She was always a serene and happy person, living on a very low income.
Her operation was just before my parents wedding, and as the family were very upset about her, no wedding photos were taken, and it was a very low-key affair."
