I had a letter from Barnardo’s earlier this year [2007] – I had contacted them about my grandfather (as family folklore had it that he had been brought up by Barnardo’s). They responded that they had no trace of Ernest but

 

“However, we can tell you that Percy Gregg was admitted to Barnardo’s on 12 June 1901 (aged 10) from Lambeth Union specifically for emigration to Canada and Jessie Dorothy Nellie Gregg (aged 13) was admitted to Barnardo’s on 1 August 1900 from Lambeth Union specifically for emigration to Canada. There is no history or dates of birth with these two admissions and therefore no other relatives are recorded. At a later date on Jessie’s record it states “Brother Bugler E. Gregg, R.O.Y.S.S., Skinsalls Camp, Yorks; Sister Miss Lily Gregg, 66 Dalberg Road, Effia Road, Brixton Hill.3
