1 John LEWIS (1726- ) [22].

Born Aug 1726. 1

"of Pantycrasdy" [A farm near Llanwnog, Montgomeryshire].

The following appears inscribed in the Lewis / Roberts Family Bible of 1620:

"John Lewis is the onear of this Book

the Lord of heaven upon him look and when his pasin bel

doth tole the Lord of heaven Receive his soul

this was mad upon estar day in the of our Lord 1782"

It is conceivable, therefore that this could have been written by either John Lewis of Pantycrasdy born 1726, or his son John Lewis born circa June 1750.

Most likely John Lewis II born June 1750 as he has written the details of his children's births and christenings within the Bible. 2

Memorial in Llanwnog Churchyard:

In memory of Morgan Lewis late clerk of this Parish who died Dec 2nd 1843 age 54 years.

Also Jane his wife who died Jun 23 1869 age 82 years.

Christ died for us that wheather [sic] we wake or sleep we should live together with Him. 1 Thes.v. 10.

In the Lewis/Roberts Family Bible of 1620 Morgan has made various scribblings such as:

"Morgan Lewis his hand and pen"

"Morgan Lewis his hand and pen he will

be good but the Lord knows when". 22

In the Lewis/Roberts Family Bible of 1620 there are other various scribblings that I am unable to attribute - in the following case perhaps it is just as well!

At the end of Esther in the Apocrypha:

"John S Savage

John Savage

Cunt and Prick". 23

In the Lewis / Roberts Family Bible of 1620 there is the following inscription:

"Thomas the son of Jeremiah Jones was born February 22nd in the year 1812 on Saturday at 4 o clock in the evening"

I have no idea at present as to whom this refers. 24

Also Jane his wife who died Jun 23 1869 age 82 years.

Christ died for us that wheather [sic] we wake or sleep we should live together with Him. 1 Thes.v. 10

Burial register also states that Jane was 82 years old at the time of her death, making her birth date circa 1787.

Llanwnog Parish Registers: (1869)

Burial: 26th June 1869 Jane Lewis ["Lewis" crossed out] Gittins, Penygloddfa, Newtown age 82 years.

In the Lewis / Roberts Family Bible of 1620 there is the following inscription:

Pantycrasdy is a farm near Llanwnog in Mongomeryshire, now Powis. It still exists, although the farmhouse is modern - i.e. not the building John Lewis would have known. The farm presently lies on a minor road that runs parallel to and north of the A470 between Carno and Clatter.
The Bible appears to have remained with the Lewises and went from Morgan Lewis into the posession of his daughter Jane who married William Roberts of Newtown.
It went from Jane to her son Robert Morgan Roberts and then to his son Archibald Lewis Roberts.
Archie gave it to his niece Gwyneth, who gave it to her son Graham Hoadly.
Graham is the present owner - 29th July 2003.
Graham Hoadly.
